"The Kōnoike Collection: Beauty of Fans" Exhibition

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Kunisada Utagawa, Hoitsu Sakai, Busei Kita et al.
The fan (ōgi) has been loved by Japanese people for many years not only as a daily necessity for keeping the heat at bay but also as an accessory for daily life and a tool for entertainment and courtesy. It is thus natural that many ukiyo-e artists decided to use such fans as canvases for their art. The fan was the most familiar work of art to the people, who could easily carry it around and admire its beauty anywhere by opening it out.

Our fan collection, taken over from the Kōnoike Family, a wealthy merchant family from Osaka, consists of more than 900 works by various artists. Thus, this collection is vital when telling the history of the fan. In this exhibition, we will exhibit about 70 representative fans from the vast number of works of the collection with fan-related ukyio-e woodblock prints.
