Junichi Arai
Junichi Arai (b. 1932) is world-renowned as Japan's preeminent textile planner. Arai manages his family's textile company in Kiryu, Gunma prefecture, and from an early age began to create fabrics with extra techniques added to the weaves. The novel fabrics born from this fusion of handwork and technology fascinated Issey Miyake and other top Japanese fashion designers in the 1970s-80s, and helped them broadcast the motive force of their works out into the world. Since then Arai has continued to herald the ideas and potential of making textiles with unflagging curiosity and a sense of passionate urgency. His works have been bathed in glory, culminating in the receipt of an honourary doctorate from the British Royal College of the Arts in 2011.

This exhibition introduces six decades of Arai's works, providing visitors with a splendid opportunity to encounter the creative spirit evoked by textiles.
