Ilya Repin

Ilya Repin (1844–1930), who lived in the chaos of Russia between the late 19th to the early 20th century, was active as a standard-bearer of realism representing modern Russian painting. He joined the avant-garde group called “The Society for Itinerant Art Exhibitions,” and gained a reputation by introducing works that exposed social contradictions and that had themes of revolutionary movement. Repin is also known as a painter who created great historical paintings that stimulated the spirit of the Russian people, as well as excellent portraits of cultural figures based on his deep insight. His heartwarming paintings of families are also noteworthy.

This exhibition is the largest-ever full-scale retrospective of Repin in Japan, consisting of around 80 oil paintings and drawings in a broad range of categories spanning his early to late years. The works will be on loan from the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the center of Russian art, which owns the largest Repin collection in the world.
