"GUTAI - The Spirit of an Era" Exhibition

The National Art Center, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Jiro Yoshihara et al.
This exhibition features around 150 works from the Gutai movement. Although well-known abroad, manifest in recent exhibitions in America and Europe, and in Kansai, this is the first major retrospective of the artists in Tokyo.

Gutai was started in Kansai in 1954 by Jiro Yoshihara and included many other artists in the Hanshin region. A leading post-war avant-garde art movement in Japan, it was disbanded in 1972, along the way producing a wealth of unique and groundbreaking art that re-examined relationships with space, form and material.
