Toru Kuwakubo
"Painting can be subject to criticism in contemporary art but if so, what is contemporary art anyway? Art is naturally unnameable, but aren't there so many contemporary "looking" works that depend on language? In pursuing art, I thought painting was the natural form for me to appeal to people" says Kuwakubo. His artistic practice started with acting as a fictional "professional painter" as the impressionists setting an easel at the beach or as a "wandering painter" who peddles his work. The sea is often used as a motif in his paintings. Using a classic way of oil painting without mixing with extra oil, he paints thick layers of rich colors which combine with his imagined scenery. He has just held a solo exhibition at The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London. His latest paintings will be on view at this exhibition.
