Run by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs since 1967, the Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists gives young artists an opportunity to travel overseas and study under specialists in their field, providing valuable support to the individuals who will build the foundations of the future Japanese art world.

Since 1997, the “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition has been held in order to publicize the work of artists supported by the program. This year marked the fifth times the exhibition has been held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. The exhibition presented the work of 12 currently active artists representing a wide variety of artistic genres: Yutaka Sone (sculpture), Maya Yonesho (animation), Chiharu Shiota (contemporary art), Misako Jin (Japanese painting), Sai Hashizume (oil painting), Harumi Yukutake (glass), Tomoko Sawada (photography), Jun Itoi (photography), Kaoru Hirano (installation art), Chiho Aono (contemporary ceramics), Manabu Ikeda (pen and ink drawing), and Osamu Obi (oil painting).
