Kunitaro Suda
While studying aesthetics and art history at Kyoto University, Kunitaro Suda (1891-1961) also studied drawing at Kansai Bijutsuin. He then went to study in Spain, where he did research on the color theory of the Venetian School and the chiaroscuro in Baroque paintings. After returning to Japan, based on Western paintings, he endeavored continuously to produce oil paintings unique to Japan.

The fruits of his efforts were presented mainly at the Dokuritsu Bijutsu Kyokai exhibitions. This exhibition features the works presented at Suda's first individual exhibition held at Shiseido Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo in 1932 and the works he submitted to the Dokuritsu Bijutsu Kyokai exhibitons. Through approximately 130 major works depicting landscapes, flowers, birds, and animals, this retrospective looks back on the world of Kunitaro Suda, who reached a uniquely profound state.
