"The Power of Brush - Points, Lines, Planes" Exhibition

Artizon Museum
Finished

Artists

Paul Gauguin, Paul Signac, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Paul Cezanne, Takeji Fujishima et al.
Landscapes, the human figure, abstractions: no matter what the subject matter or genre, draw near to a painting and you will see—paint. Look carefully at the marks of the brush used to apply that paint, marks indelibly left in the painting, and you will notice their peculiarities: points of color, perhaps arranged in lines, lines adding emphasis, and planes in which an entire area is covered in paint. Each of these brush strokes vividly communicate the motions of the artist's hand, his breath, the rhythms carved into the painting, and its physicality.

This exhibition focuses on the development of Western art from Monet, Renoir, and other Impressionists up to Matisse and Picasso in the twentieth century, with the addition of modern Western-style paintings by Japanese artists such as Tsuguharu Fujita (Léonard Foujita) and Shigeru Aoki, and postwar Abstract paintings. As you enjoy the 170 paintings in this exhibition from the Bridgestone Museum of Art collection, focus on the power of the brush.
