"Meme Genes of Culture in Art - Exploration of Tradition, Technique and Modernity in Calligraphy, Copperplate Prints, and Japanese Paintings" Exhibition

Shibuya Hikarie 8/ Cube 1, 2, 3
Finished
Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, invented the term "meme", referring to “genes of culture”. That is, just as genes of earth’s creatures have evolved through continuous reproduction, transmission, mutation, and natural selection, human customs and habits as well as culture are transmitted, developed and handed down to future generations through reproduction and mimicking.

This exhibition highlights the meme of the works by young artists who have mastered the traditional techniques of scriptures and calligraphy, copperplate prints, or Japanese paintings, all of which have its long history and tradition. Their works are embodiments of ambition for innovative expression of their artistic aestheticism, the representation of their meme that can survive the natural selection while still maintaining extremely details of expressions as seen in traditional artisan work.
