Ekaku Hakuin
Ekaku Hakuin (1685–1768) was a Zen monk in the Edo period recognized as the restorer of the Rinzai school of Buddhism, who also left behind ten thousand Zen paintings. These works, used by Hakuin to educate the public during his lifetime, are highly regarded by some researchers and collectors, although he is not generally considered to be famous.

This exhibition will be the first-ever full-scale Hakuin exhibition under the supervision of Professor Katsuhiro Yoshizawa of Hanazono University, a researcher of Zen history who has recently published an outstanding research book on Hakuin, and Professor Yuji Yamashita of Meiji Gakuin University, an art historian who explains the importance of Hakuin in art history of the Edo Period.

Since many of Hakuin's artworks are owned by temples and individuals, there have been few opportunities for the general public to appreciate his work. In this exhibition, approximately 100 paintings, mainly large-scale works, will be gathered together from around the country.
