"51st Advertisements Beneficial to Consumers Contest" Exhibition

The Ad Museum Tokyo
Finished
The “Advertisements Beneficial to Consumers Contest” was launched in 1961 with the objective of recognizing and celebrating advertisements truly beneficial to consumers from the vast number of advertisements we are exposed to around the clock. By introducing such advertisements, we hoped to contribute to the sound development of advertising activities.

The contest has five categories – newspaper, magazine, television, radio and Web – and the total number of entries last year was 3,689. 113 works were selected as winners last year. The best works of newspaper, television and radio were awarded the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award. The best works of radio and Websites were awarded the Best JAA Awards.

Japan was stuck by a catastrophe last year and using the characteristics of each medium, information was sent that was essential for our lives, demonstrating the indispensability of information coming from media. At the same time, commercials disappeared from television and other media. A little later, some commercials were repeatedly run on television.

When things settled down, commercials started to appear again on television and on the rest of the media and people’s perceptions toward commercials, we think, have changed. People used to watch commercials without paying particular attention to them, but after the disaster hit Japan, people realized that commercials are sources of information deeply associated with our lives and that they also help enrich life.

We hope you will visit the exhibition and view all the exhibited works, selected with the criterion of being beneficial to consumers, and representative of commercials which relate to people and society, and are useful to them.
