Artists

Berndt Friberg
Berndt Friberg (1899-1981) was born in Sweden. His ceramic works are known for their sensitive, elegant forms and the beautiful color effects of the glazes he developed through patient experimentation. At a time when many people are concerned with developing an art for the masses, Friberg’s sophisticated explorations of the possibilities of modern ceramics have given color to peoples’ lives. He has been acknowledged as a genius of craft, and his work is loved by people all over the world, including King Carl Gustaf of Sweden and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. It has been acquired by many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as museums in his home country of Sweden. The form and color of his ceramics have a beauty and strength that makes it possible to see them as sculpture.
