James Ensor (1860-1949) is a major figure in Belgian modern art, known for the influence he had on Surrealism and expressionism through his unique emotional portrayal of the inner depths of the heart, using motifs of masks, skeletons and the grotesque. This exhibition draws on the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp to present around 50 oil works and sketches, alongside works by other Flemish artists and his contemporaries.
