“Thirteen Orphans” is a Mah-jong hand in which all the tablets are different, but fit together to makes the strongest possible combination. If one piece is missing the hand is worthless.
For many years Yamagata has visited Shinobazu-no-ike, the lake adjoining Tokyo's Ueno Park. Here people gather from all walks of life and of all conceivable experiences. Yamagata spends many hours and days getting to know the people over a long period of time, establishing mutual trust before asking to take a photograph.
