Ken Nakazawa
Ando Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of a new installation work by Ken Nakazawa.
Nakazawa was born in Tokyo in 1970, graduated from Department of Oil Painting and completed the Postgraduate Course at Tama Art University in 1994. He participated in the group exhibition "MOT Annual 1999: Modest Radicalism" at Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, in 1999, also joined "YOKOHAMA 2001: International Triennale of Contemporary Art" at Pacifico Yokohama, in 2001. Nakazawa has been receiving high commendation as an installation artist, who composes installation works using thin and wispy materials such as wires and nylon filaments, integrating them in concert with the spaces of respective venues.
The main material selected for the new installation is the 4 mm wide steel rods painted in white. As the title "30 Pairs" indicates, the installation is composed of 30 pairs of objects gently forming five rows. As minimal components, there are 60 of same-shaped pieces: each of them is formed by two wire rods of equal length extending horizontally, held aloft and welded to each side of the vertical support rods standing approximately 140 cm tall. Two of these pieces are positioned and combined oppositely with a horizontal plane to create a self-standing object. Each piece is structurally unstable and can not stand by itself, they can only stand by becoming paired. The symbolic form of the objects that each piece supports the other to stand on the ground evokes various sorts of images. However, the intent and the meaning remain unrevealed.
"It does not fill the space with a limited image but suggests the site by not being limiting." As Nakazawa remarked, we walk in and experience "the site" then we will find our own answers to the question from the artist.
Besides this solo show in Tokyo, Nakazawa will participate in the group show at Galerie EIGEN + ART Leipzig in Germany on March, this year. Nakazawa's further steps as well as his continued career are expected.
