Artists

Katsuhiko Hibino
Taro Okamoto was an artist whose expression was not merely limited to painting and sculpture, but surpassed the very bounds of genre. In 1951 he encountered the Jomon pottery exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum and the following year he presented in the art magazine “Mizue” the article “Dialogue in 4 dimensions – A discussion of Jomon Pottery”, marking him as the first artist to appreciate the beauty of Jomon ware beyond the existing framework of art.

Okamoto was born in Takatsu in the center of Kawasaki city. At the time these Jomon ceramics were created Kawasaki was half below the sea and over time the sea receded and the city of Kawasaki developed. Known as an industrial town, Kawasaki is a city which holds a deep relationship with water and the sea.

This exhibition presents the work of a prolific artist who shares in Okamoto’s diverse genre crossing approach to art, Kazuhiko Hibino, with a particular focus upon a work in progress which highlights the relation between Kawasaki and the sea, in an unusual experiment which reflects upon the history of the city through the pottery of the Jomon era and the work of Kazuhiko Hibino.
