Yamashita creates work through turning an eye to the multiple functions of space, and working a rereading of this through his particular perspective. The work “10cm wide T.Rex”(2008) highlights the function of opening and closing of a given space, fixing a 3-D model of the king of dinosaurs behind the door of the gallery to create the situation where the viewers must become part of the work without choice. He picks up the things which escape us in our everyday consciousness and through their reinterpretation guides us towards their reimagination. A good example of this may be seen in the work “Bye Bye Photos” – which gathers the photographs of the rear shot of items which are on sale through internet auctions. With a collection of photographs capturing ultraman figures lying on their stomachs on newspaper and the such like, we are removed from the will of the photographer and feel a sense of discomfort between the background and the icon (sales item). Through the hands of Yamashita the materials of this work are separated from their original context and transformed into a new presence. In the current times when a plethora of products are consumed within the existing frame, Yamashita draws out a light unknown to the everyday through the realigning of these objects through the unique perspective of his work, in what may be a concrete proposal as to how we are to survive this world.
