Josef Koudelka
Josef Koudelka (born in Czechoslovakia in 1938) is one of the most important photographers in the world today. This exhibition traces his career from his earliest to his most recent works.
Following his early involvement in photography from the 1960s and his rise to a well-known figure in the Czechoslovakian photography world through his pictures of the Prague theater and a particular turning point marked by his documentation of the Warsaw Pact troops invading Prague, this exhibition reflects upon Koudelka’s roots and his subsequent trajectory. His exhibitions of work including Gypsies (1962-1970), taken while still in Czechoslovakia, and Exiles (1970-1994), shot throughout Europe after his defection, were met with critical acclaim hailed for their poetic and uniquely powerful images offering profound insights into civilization during the 20th century.
Here in this exhibition, Koudelka’s first in Asia, rare vintage prints and the panoramic Chaos series (1986-2012), are shown alongside an impressive collection which offers an overview of Josef Koudelka’s entire body of work.
