Yuhei Higashikata
Yuhei Higashikata takes familiar motifs and with his own twist of humor transforms them into images never encountered before. For example in his work “A Summer’s Day 0815” he presents us with a steel merry-go-round of the cucumber and aubergine creatures of Obon, while in “Crossing Samurai in Fujizawa” he fashions a level crossing bar into a kendo stick. With its visual impact Higashikata’s work also features an effective use of “sound”, the hollow chime of the merry-go-round adding to the comical appearance of the “spirit vehicles” upon the merry-go-round, while one also senses the gap between the cries of kendo, usually confined to a sports room, and the ring of the level crossing usually to be found outside. Through the effective control of the sense of sight and sound the artist throws us into a condition in which we asked to question where and with what we are confronted, bringing to light a whole new world through the manipulation of common obejcts.
