In 1886, there was an artist who submitted a dream-like black and white charcoal drawing to the 8th Impressionist Exhibition, which was filled with colorful works that depicted contemporary life. This individual was Odilon Redon (1840-1916), a leading artist of the French symbolist movement. Amidst the rise of realism, which concerned itself with representations of the external world and reality, Redon was gaining recognition for his depictions of internal emotions and fantasies, together with a growing anti-realism movement. He began to win the support of the next generation of artists, literary figures, and critics all at once. However, Redon was not by any means indifferent to empirical natural science, and its influence is evident in his dream-like works. This exhibition first focuses on his early years in his birth city of Bordeaux in southwestern France, where his interest in fantasy and natural science was cultivated, highlighting his discoveries in Bordeaux during his youth. The exhibition also explores how the discoveries in Bordeaux led to the flourishing of his later works in the period of “noirs” and “couleurs”. With the full cooperation of Musee des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux in France and the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu, home to the largest Redon collection in Japan, this exhibition displays approximately 150 oil, pastel and other works to trace “les origines de la fantasie” of artist Odilon Redon.
