Ishiuchi first traveled to Hiroshima in 2007 and has continued to visit every year for her ongoing photography project.
The subjects of her photographs are the relics left by those who perished in the bombing— a flowered dress, a polka dot blouse, a tailor-made jacket, broken glasses…The work presented here is a documentary of this process directed by Linda Hoaglund, an American translator and director of the film “Anpo,” who following Ishiuchi over a one-year period.
Captured within this film is the reaction of Canadian audiences to this remarkable exhibition, witnessing the responses of those who have encountered the devastation of the atomic bombing for the first time, those who are filled with thoughts towards the young girl who once wore that patterned dress, someone who confesses that their grandfather was involved in the production of nuclear bombs, an ex-soldier recalling his deceased wife whom he met in Hiroshima. The film presents an interwoven combination of thoughts, emotions and reflections brought about by the photo series.
“What can art do to keep alive the memory of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? How can it be used to transcend time and continue to speak the truth?” This film sheds new light up the questions Hiroshima poses to the world.
