Taro Okamoto - Shamanism

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Finished

Artists

Taro Okamoto
The influences of Mauss, Koeye and Bataille upon the creative thinking of Taro Okamoto have been well noted, but this exhibition turns towards Okamoto’s interest in shamanism which came to a fore in the 1950’s, with scholarly criticism such as the “Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy” (1951) by Mircea Eliade being of key reference to him at this period. This exhibition reviews Okamoto's works from 1940s through to his last days, focusing on the influence Eliade's books, etc. which may reveal a key to the artist intentions through this period.
