Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti
Held as a pinnacle of the Renaissance and one of the greatest artists in the history of Western art, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) has been revered as a near god-like figure ever since his lifetime up to the present day and this greatness is celebrated here in an exhibition of 60 works taken from the Casa Buonarroti (Florence) collection. Works include the “Madonna of the Stairs”, an early-period masterpiece of marble relief carving created when the artist was just 15 years old, and here presented for the first time outside of the Casa Buonarroti. These are accompanied by a wide range of drawings, which present a particularly rare opportunity to delve into this genius artist’s creative process and its secrets. The exhibition also introduces such previously little-known historical materials as letters and manuscripts written by Michelangelo himself, further illuminating the human side of this larger-than-life artist and the anguish that accompanied his artistic production.
