This event has ended.

The Experimental Workshop was a collective of young avant-garde artists working in a variety of genres. It included visual artists Shozo Kitadai, Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, and Tetsuro Komai, photographer Kiyoji Otsuji, musicians Toru Takemitsu, Joji Yuasa, Kazuo Fukushima, Hiroyoshi Suzuki, and Takahiro Sonoda, lighting artist Naoji Imai, technician Hideo Yamazaki, and poet Kuniharu Akiyama. Organized in 1951, this group was ahead of its time even by international standards. Especially remarkable was its advocacy of a total art that included visual art, music, and the performing arts. This is the first exhibition in a public museum to examine the overall activities of the Experimental Workshop, presenting some 450 items, including paintings, sculptures, photography, film and video, musical scores, and performance programs.
