While the 1940’s was a time of great difficulty for artists during the war years, it was also an age filled with many possibilities in the development and shift of modernism. This exhibition presents a range of work from Taikan Yokoyama’s “Sacredness of Japan [Mount Fuji]” to the “Hiroshima Panels” of Toshio and Iri Maruki, along with the works and documents of a range of artists who worked both before and after the war, with a new opportunity to reinterpret “1940’s Art”, in a challenge to the established divisions of pre-war, war time, and post-war periods.
