Katsushika Hokusai and Kawanabe Kyōsai-Fantastic Comics

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Gyosai Kawanabe
Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849) depicted people dancing amusingly, waves and wind, rain and nature, everything in this world as well as the supernatural in his work "Hokusai Manga." Later, an artist of the Kanō School of art by the name of Kawanabe Kyōsai was strongly influenced by the works of Hokusai. Kyōsai depicted humorous dancing skeletons, personified frogs, and many other scenes comparable to Hokusai’s pictures.

This exhibition explores the works of Hokusai and Kyōsai, mostly un-compared until now, as two genius artists whose funny and powerful images led to the world of contemporary manga comics.

Session 1: 4/27-5/26
