Yuichi Inoue
Yuichi Inoue (1916 - 1985) is one of Japan’s most important calligraphers. His experimental “one character writings” possess a general plasticity, receiving acclaim in both Japan and abroad as outstanding masterpieces existing somewhere between calligraphy and painting. Fitting with the abstract expressionism movement in the 1950s, Inoue’s work appeared in the exhibitions “Modern Japanese Calligraphy” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1954 and “Abstract Art – Japan and the USA” in 1955 and 1956, which toured five European countries after its launch at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. His pieces were later displayed at international exhibitions such as the São Paulo Art Biennial, Documenta, and Carnegie International. The critic Herbert Read compared his calligraphy to masters such as Jackson Pollock. After Inoue’s death, a 1989 retrospective exhibition toured seven domestic art museums, followed by the inclusion of his work in “Scream Against the Sky: Japanese Art After 1945,” which appeared at the Yokohama Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum SoHo, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1994 and 1995. His work was also featured at this year’s Sharjah Biennial 11 curated by Yuko Hasegawa. Inoue’s art can be found in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as other Japanese and international museums.
