This talk is held in conjunction with the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo’s National Film Center exhibition, “Titled Film Stills: Publicity Photos for Japanese Cinema.” The exhibition introduces the world to the stills of Japanese films, powerful works of art that were often underappreciated in Japanese cinema but nonetheless important in promoting the movies.

One of the talk’s presenters is Kyoichi Tsuzuki, a writer, producer, photographer, and editor. Tsuzuki has spent many years collecting old lobby cards (colored stills) for Japanese movies, foreign film posters, and other printed materials of cinema. Also participating is Hidenori Okada, the head researcher of the National Film Center. Both will speak to the limitless charms of the era’s cinematic design, which featured memorable elements such as artificial coloring and hand-written typography. The talk will be in Japanese.

Venue: Tsutaya Books Bldg. 1, 1F Information Center
Capacity: 50. Attendance is free, but tickets are required. Visit the Art Counter on 1F of Bldg. 2 for tickets. Standing will be permitted if interest exceeds seating capacity.
