Nabeshima-yaki and the Design Book

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
During the Edo period, under the official supervision of the Saga clan, Nabeshima wares were produced solely as gifts to the Tokugawa shogun family and elite officials. This resulted in strict rules governing the shape, design, and color of these wares, as recorded in the design book, passed down by the Saga clan Nabeshima family, exemplifying the modern appeal and innovative design of the Nabeshima ware. This book also recorded the dates, sizes, quantity of production and the recipients in great detail, becoming a major source for the history of Nabeshima-yaki ceramics even prior to excavations. In this exhibition this design book is featured alongside key examples of Nabeshima-yaki ceramics.
