Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
This event has ended.
Between the Meiji to early Showa era the royal court centered around the emperor had a particular range of special clothes which its members were expected to wear. In order to establish a modern nation the Meiji government actively promoted the adoption of European systems and culture, and as part of this movement it was decided that the royal court would also wear Western clothes, while at the same time there were various occasions when they would also wear traditional dress. This exhibition follows the fashion of the court through its various rituals and events, examining the unique style and identity of the royal family and their associates through 80 examples of these garments.
