Iku Harada “One Window and Awaking Garden”

Artists

Iku Harada
Painting is a window connecting the mundane real world to somewhere non-existent. Iku Harada makes computerised virtual reality spaces out of houses and parks. She then creates scenes from that world in paint. She is not uninterested in the real world, as her technique is more complex. She puts her physical paintings into gallery spaces-not actual galleries, but those constructed in virtual worlds, and then paints real scenes of these exhibitions. Once the scenes are hung on walls in real spaces, they suddenly resemble windows again, and the floors and walls of the paintings start to seem connected with the actual floors and walls. The complexity increases when the original painting is hung next to its representation, as one feels a certain distortion of space, or an extreme, three-dimensional trompe-l’œil.
