Ichiro Sato
On the occasion of Ichiro Sato’s retirement from Tokyo University of the Arts this exhibition takes a unique look over his impressive career. Graduating from the Oil Painting Course of the same university in 1970, Sato went on to join the overseas study program of “Der Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst”(DAAD) and studied under
Rudolf Husner at the Hamburg University of Art. Returning to Japan in 1980, inspired by Husner’s writings Sato took it upon himself to translate a key text of his teacher. The following year he became professor of the Oil Painting Technique and Material Department of Tokyo University of Arts, and served this role with dedication for 34 years, while continuing to research the materials and approaches to painting and publishing numerous essays on the subject. In recent years Sato has actively researched the Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan and the Kizil Caves of Xinjiang, simultaneously continuing in the development of his own work. This exhibition examines the many faces of Ichiro Sato as artist, researcher and educator.
