Okoku Konoshima
In a retrospective of the work of nihonga legend Okoku Konoshima(1877-1938) this exhibition examines examples of his work and accompanying documents covering the various periods of his career across the Meiji to Showa era. Born in Sanjo-Muromachi, Konoshima studied under the Maruyama Shijo style of Keinen Imao, coming to develop a highly delicate description of animals and nature in his lyrical works, evolving into flower patterns between the late Meiji to Taisho period. He was at one point a leader of the Kyoto art scene but as the Showa period set in he came to take an increasing distance from the art world. He came to settle on a high quality of Southern school nihonga, while folding screen commissions for the Sumitomo family revealed his strength as a designer, from which point he also came to draw upon his early experiences fabric pattern design. This exhibition hopes to provide insightful reflection upon the varied career of this artist.
