Yuzo Saeki, Katsuzo Satomi
Inspired by their experiences in Paris, Western-style painters Kanji Maeda, Katsuzo Satomi, Zentaro Koshima, Yuzo Saeki, and Takanori Kinoshita formed an artists’ group in 1926, hoping to revive the waning art of Japanese painting through the principles of “love, respect, and art.” Their movement, called the “1930 Association” evolved into the “Independent Art Association” before disbanding. Called “Japanese Fauvists,” they left a legacy of unique artistic styles born from friendship and sympathetic ideas more than any particular artistic theory or technique. This exhibition introduces works from the museum’s collection by artists with ties to the 1930 Association and the Independent Art Association.
