Taking the decade of the 1960s as a historical point of reference – an unprecedented period of artistic incubation advancing art as a form of experimental social device - this exhibition draws upon the efforts of the Japanese avant-garde to disturb previously accepted social, economic and cultural systems, seeking to provoke a reaction to such conflicts and fictions. This exhibition gathers both leaders of this era along with contemporary artists who have inherited their legacy, mapping out these entwined relationships and influences of the Japanese avant-garde on younger generations.
