Mitsuo Tani attempts to take the oppositions of front and back, inside and outside, shadow and light, “hone” and “tatemae” and lay them out together upon the same canvas, utilizing both sides of the surface in a repeated application of color and paint which comes to form particular depth through its opposing directions.
