Celebrating 50 years of the International Ukiyo-e Society this exhibition presents a rare chance to view some of the finest examples of Ukiyo-e from collections around Japan and the rest of the world, with 430 historic prints on show alongside the ukiyo-e text book and international selection.
This collection offers up a cross section of the Ukiyo-e hisotry from the early renderings of Hishigawa Moronobu, to the “Golden Age” of Utamaro and Sharaku to its later developments epitomized by the work of Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi, followed by the Nishiki-e Newspaper of the Meiji era and the modern women of Goyo Hashiguchi. The Edo-Tokyo Museum brings a plethora of Ukiyo-e genres together under one roof.
