Emerging in post WWI France Surrealism quickly came to spread its international influence, developing into one of the greatest art movements of the 20th Century. In opening ones eyes the world of dreams, the unconscious, and illogical the proponents of this model sought out a new vision, a new way of living in a free expression which reached beyond the frame of tradition. In this way the surrealists populated their works with the wonders of chance and other dissociated images, pursuing an aesthetic of the strange, in playful highly innovative creations, coming to embody a teasing spirit, unrestrained by traditions and customs, through various techniques of collage, frottage and object making. This exhibition gathers together 200 paintings, photographs, sculptures, objects and associated writings and documents of Surrealist artists and shines a light upon the multiple aspects of their unique form of “play”.
