Finished

Artists

Yoshiyasu Suzuka, Rinko Kawauchi, Tokihiro Sato, Iwao Yamawaki, Christian Boltanski, Yasumasa Morimura
Tracing the 18th-century German philosopher, Baumgarten’s “science of sensibility” , this exhibition selects from the museum’s collection of over 29000 photographs key examples of work which may reveal the essence of aesthetics as a means of perceiving beauty in the phenomena of the world around us. Divided over five elements of light, reflection, surface, loss and reference these works ask the question "Where does beauty lie in a photograph?"
From the first ever photographs emerging in the 19th-century to those from the modern day, this collection of photographs offers multiple examples of how beauty has been expressed in photographic form.
The Japanese characters for "photograph" (shashin) literally mean "to reflect the truth." Sometimes perceiving an ever-expanding beauty through photographs is more important than knowing "the truth". In this exhibition it is hoped through the aesthetics of photography that new channels for perception of beauty are bound to open up.
