Up until now the material skill and dexterity of the Japanese has been labeled as “craft” through the over domination of the Western concept of art. From this perspective the key to understanding this cultural mentality lies in the craftsmanship itself. Artists dedicated to discipline and training have taken the style of “Ko-jutsu” (meaning skilled technique) as a new weapon of craftsmanship to point towards a new sense of value within the trajectory of contemporary art. This exhibition explores the concrete possibilities of lifting the historical strengths of this culture towards a unique future of Japanese art.
