Umekayo
Photographer Ume Kayo has a talent for discovering wonderful scenes in ordinary everyday situations. The world that she shows us includes scenes that seem quite likely but are actually rather weird, moments of laughter or surprise, and even moments that are a little scary. UME Kayo is the most keenly watched young photographer in Japan today, and her first solo exhibition at an art museum is a highly anticipated event. It includes works from the Shutter Chance series that demonstrates the snap photography that is the foundation for much of her work, the Danshi series and Long live grampa series that pivot on the artist’s relationships with familiar people, and also a series of photographs related to her recent publication. These series are unflinchingly re-edited for the exhibition in combination with a number of previously unpublished works. Also presented for the first time in a decade is UME’s early works Junior High School Girls series, which hints at the origins of her creativity.
