Artists

Yuichi Inoue
One of Japan’s leading calligraphers, Yuichi Inoue(1916-1985) is renowned for his single character calligraphy works which crossed between calligraphy and painting. He moved from the abstract expressionism of the 1950s to group exhibitions at the New York MOMA and joined the 2nd Documenta in Kassel. He was lauded as on par with Jackson Pollok by the critic Herbert Read, and in 1989 his retrospective exhibition was toured around 7 art museums around Japan, with his work also being presented in this year’s Sharjah Biennial, with the curation of Yuko Hasegawa. At Tomio Koyama gallery 10 of his works featured in the Biennale are presented, while at the same time in the gallery space in Shibuya Hikarie, 10 works based on the kanji character for flower are showcased, as well as 12 small works being shown at Nihonbashi’s Kamiyaart space.
