Yohei Sugita
Yohei Sugita has been receiving much attention as a rare talent who, with his extremely innovative and painstakingly controlled brush strokes, creates a world where the concrete and abstract coexist. In this exhibit, Sugita places more awareness on the context of modern history than in the nostalgic classical tendencies of his past works, which resemble impressionist paintings. His thoughts, he says, have been shifting more to the contemporary with influences from recent painters who have emerged on the world stage since the 90s, such as Harnan Bas and Michaël Borremans. Incorporating centaurs, butterflies, wolves, and other motifs with narrative qualities, he has produced 15 paintings where fantastical scenes and mature allegory exist side-by-side.
