Artists and curators active in Africa and Japan jointly present a keynote lecture, a dance performance film screening, and symposium roundtable discussions. The program features three outstanding events showcasing Japan and Africa’s art scenes. With Japanese/English interpretation.

Keynote Lecture: “Locating Africa: Current Issues”
An overview of African art in Japan with a focus on the contemporary scene.
Time: 13:00-13:30
Guest speaker: Yukiya Kawaguchi (Rikkyo University professor)
Partial screening of the dance performance “Fagaala”
This dance is a collaboration between Kota Yamazaki and Germaine Acogny, Senegal’s leading contemporary dance pioneer. Depicting genocide in Rwanda and the essence of human nature, the performance has received strong praise since its opening with tours at festivals around the world.

Symposium
Part 1: Uniting Japan and Africa through Art
Why is now a crucial time for exchange between Japan and Africa? What can encourage communication between artists facing cultural differences and physical distance? A discussion on the theme of “Japan and Africa” by artists from various countries.

Moderator: Another Africa director Missla Libsekal (Canada, Eritrea, Ethiopia)
Recess: 16:00-16:15
Part 2: Contemporary African Art Curation and Japan
What is contemporary African art and what is contemporary African art curation? Discussion of the present and future of African art by international researchers and curators, with particular attention paid to possibilities in Japan.
Time: 16:15-18:00
Moderator: Toshio Shimizu (independent curator, Gakushuin Women’s College professor)
All speakers will engage in discussions and answer questions from 18:00-18:30
