Eiko Tanaka
Still life refers to style of painting particularly popularized by 17th Century Holland, taking natural objects such as fruits and flowers, as well as man-made objects such as crockery, arrangements of life which is immobile. But here the artist reinterprets this art term as “still alive”, refusing to pin down an object in photographic realism but drawing instead upon the ambivalence of objects and giving rise to a set of new relations between us as living beings and still objects. Her paintings consist of nonchalant scenes of bowling alleys, car parks, highways, architectural structures and on this occasion rivers and flat screen monitors. Here she further renders the image into the realm of the unconscious through the use of newspaper and magazine clippings touching upon a slight sense of discomfort which is further shared with the audience themselves.
