Yayoi Kusama “I Love Myself Too Much!!”
This event has ended.
In this special exhibition at the Karuizawa New Art Museum, Japan’s representative artist, Yayoi Kusama, reflects on the age she lives in and her past, present, and future with works that demonstrate, in her words, her great “love of self.”
Part one looks back on Kusama’s beginnings as an artist in Japan, tracing her journey from her hometown of Matsumoto to her art school days in Kyoto and her arrival as an artist in Tokyo. Part two considers the huge influence of her time in New York while placing her work within the context of the postwar avant-garde movement neo-dadaism. Part three examines her “dark period” from when she returned to Japan until she won her place in the limelight at the Venice Biennale, offering insights into her current diverse body of work. Part four paints a picture of her success in Venice and subsequent recognition on the global stage, exploring the broad-reaching impact of these events and inviting viewers to contemplate her recent works and future direction as an artist.
Going beyond her famous dots, this exhibition offers a look at the real Yayoi Kusama and her charming self regard.
