Kota Hirakawa
Kota Hirakawa (b. 1987), a graduate of Tokyo University of Arts Graduate School, has been awarded the 2012 Golden Competition Grand Prize, the Sompo Japan Art Exhibition Jury Prize, and the 2013 Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi Mitsubishi Prize.

Trinitite is a mineral created out of melted desert sand during atomic bomb experiments. During a research tour of Hiroshima, Hirakawa saw the histories of death and Japan’s postwar art encapsulated in the beauty of the mineral, which led to the works presented here.

In the “Trinitite” series, Hirakawa recreates war paintings by the Japanese army in monochrome. By repainting works by artists who lived through World War II, Hirakawa attempts to recapture the past as a member of a younger generation. August being the Japanese month of mourning, this exhibition provides the chance to reconsider the country’s past as well as its future.
