This Shirokane Art complex 5th Anniversary exhibition, curated by Hiroshi Sugimoto, coincides with the Mori Art Museum’s 10th Anniversary exhibition “Love.”
The self-taught sculptor Masaya Hashimoto, who lives and works in a Buddhist temple, has been using the bones and antlers of deer in his art for the past few years. This exhibition presents works created from the body of a deceased deer, which Hashimoto encountered on a mountaintop. Alongside Hashimoto’s works are 14th century paintings of the Buddha Aizenmyouou (Ragaraja), who attained enlightenment by elevating love and desire as aspirational human instincts rather than refuting them. Also on display are pieces from Hiroshi Sugimoto's collection and anatomic drawings by Jacques‐Fabien Gautier D'Agoty. These works provoke thoughts on love and death throughout the ages.
