Gyokudo Kawai

Gathering together the Yamatane Museum of Art’s entire collection of work from the leading Nihonga artist Gyokudo, this exhibition presents masterpieces, especially restored works, plus other rarely seen items such as calligraphy and paintings on pottery. Renowned works such as “Cormorant Fishing” (Yamatane Museum of Art); the Kano school-influenced “Hills and Streams in Autumn” (Yamatane Museum of Art), and, Red and White Plum Blossoms (Gyokudo Art Museum), reveal the influence from the styles of the Rimpa and Nanga school and trace the development of his new interpretations of such styles, culminating in the richly evocative and lyrical work of his later years. Upon his death in 1957, the Nihonga painter Kaburaki Kiyokata commented, “With the death of the great Japanese landscape painter Gyokudo, I feel as if the rivers and mountains of Japan have disappeared”, and in this exhibition one may surely sense the spring of life which Gyokudo engendered in his poetic landscapes.
