Kyoji Takahashi
Kyoji Takahashi creates a photography studio in Watari-um to capture the portraits of visitors to the museum. A photography studio may be found in the corner of any town and is a place of commemoration of graduation, marriage, festivity and the seasons of life, in itself a place of quiet ritual. In an age when anyone can easily take photos, these spaces bring a nostalgia of excitement and anticipation surrounding photographic technology. Standing before the lens, taking a bright pose and capturing an “eternal moment”. In a time when photography is nothing out of the ordinary, this act restores that sense of something special. This is something which can only occur within a particular place and here the photographer and the subject become joined together through this process. Here Takahashi provides a temporary studio drawing upon the legacy of Man Ray’s Paris studio and freezes upon a single piece of paper a moment of truth and an eternal stage.
